[DesignAxis] Eclectic Redesign

 Hi there!

This is the last of the current DesignAxis series on Nor Cal BFF's office redo, and here's the big reveal!  It turned out great, but there are a few details that need to be completed, like some plants & accessories, as well as the window shade.  Overall, I believe that we accomplished what she wanted as far as style, price, and functionality.
This is probably my favorite area in the office.  It's not your typical office conference area, but it is still practical yet beautiful.  I'm partial to this area because of the chandelier (a birthday gift from me), and the oil paintings I found for a steal at $30 each!  And remember how we reupholstered the chairs in this post here? The chandelier reminded the owner of Venice (she's from Italy), and Nor Cal BFF said the paintings look like Lake Garda in Italy, where her and her family went on vacation a few years ago.
Remember all the before photos of the office in this post here?  This photo is the conference area before...what a change!
Nor Cal BFF found the entry table while she was driving by a yard sale, paid only $12 for it, and it fits perfectly into our eclectic Italian design! She has a photo of the Italian owners above the table. Perfect use of the Repurpose Mode design approach I discuss in this post here.
A view from the front door.  The plaque in the back was given to her from someone she works with.
Her old desk ended up not working in the new space, so she found this desk for only $150 on Craigslist! So great that we were able to coordinate the space together at such a discounted price!
Finally, the kitchen area with my old sofa table and the raised wood table & chairs I found on Craigslist for $50.  Nor Cal BFF splurged on a Keurig for her and her staff...what a nice boss!  She even has a lovely bathroom area as seen in this post here.
It was fun playing interior designer for a month! I don't claim to be an expert or even updated with all the trends of interior design, but I know what I like. I have eclectic taste, since I like a variety of styles, just like my fashion taste and sense.

What do you enjoy doing, and would you ever consider turning that hobby into a way to earn some cash? Let me know because I think that most of us dream of making money doing what we love! Thank you for visiting and being a part of my journey!

See you later!

[DesignAxis] Target Bathroom Redo

Hi there!

Continuing on with the office redecorating series for Nor Cal BFF involved a bathroom redo as well.  I'm using my final design tip that doesn't truly use the Repurpose Mode, as discussed in this post here, but allows me the liberty to shop at my favorite store, Target!
The plain hallway to the bathroom with a missing closet door on the right.
The hallway looks much better after the closet door on the right is replaced by canvas curtains hanging on a tension rod all from Target.
Sink and toilet area before.
Just the addition of a soap dispenser and towel holder from Target, and a picture Nor Cal BFF repurposed from home, spruces up this area.
View of the shower area before.
View of shower area after, with Target towels and shower curtain rod, and a shower curtain gift from her mom...so sweet!
The plaque was left in the office space, so we used it because it was free!  Ribbon scraps were used to add color and flourish to the towels.
Don't you love that Target has everything you need to add a special touch to your home decorating?  Let me know if this is one of your favorite places for home accessories also!  Stay tuned for the final office redo reveal next week!  Thank you for visiting and being a part of my journey!

See you later!

[DesignAxis] Chair Repurpose

Hi there!

Here's the final step in my Repurpose Mode design philosophy I discuss in a previous post here.  You should never rule out an item because it's not your style or because it's worn, since most things can be repurposed!  Remember the dining table & chairs I purchased on Craigslist for $75?  The fabric was stained and was more of a modern style for the office space redo, so when I saw the floral upholstery fabric for less than $10 at a yard sale, I knew it would be perfect for the Craigslist chairs!
The floral upholstery fabric sample on the Craigslist chair to start the Chair Repurpose!
Start by unscrewing the seat cushion from the bottom of the chair.
Measure and cut the fabric to fit over the cushion with extra to wrap around the bottom.  Because the seat cushions still had good support, we just wrapped over the old fabric.
Get your handy dandy staple gun and staple the fabric to the bottom of the seat cushion.
That was easy!  And it doesn't have to be perfect because seriously, who's going to look under the chair?!
Now just screw the seat cushion back on to the chair...
And there you go!  Before & After.  Doesn't that look ten times better?!  Wait until you see it all put together with the table in the new office space!
Have you ever repurposed an item, that you purchased or already had at home, to give it new life?  Let me know because I repurpose items in my home all the time!  Thank you for visiting and being a part of my journey!

[DesignAxis] Design Repurpose Mode

Hi there!

Remember the redecorating project for Nor Cal BFF's office on this blog post here?   In order to continue the DesignAxis series with this second installment and to fulfill my inner designer, I am going to show you how using my Repurpose Mode design approach can save you lots of dollars, yet yield you great style results!

The first step in this approach is to go shopping in your own space, because you already have the stuff and it's basically free.  In this case, Nor Cal BFF was able to scour through the basement at work, finding a couple of great pieces!
The first find were these pair of chairs...we'll just clean them up and they're good to go!
I was planning on placing a large mirror on this wall, and assumed it would be a big ticket item because of the size.  Imagine my surprise when she told me about this second find.  After I saw it, I was thrilled because it was perfect!
The second step is to look through Craigslist or eBay.  I found this counter height wood cafe table and these chairs for $50 on Craigslist.  The accessories on the utility cart were left in her new space (read free), so I'm using them in the redesign!

Another Craigslist find (below) was the glass-topped conference room table with 4 chairs I got for a steal at $75!
The third step is to pick things up at yard sales.  This upholstery fabric was $10 at a yard sale.  I got about 2 yards of it along with a large bulletin board thrown in at that price.  See the post here on one way to recycle old, worn items to give them new life to round out the final steps of the Repurpose Mode.
I am really loving Craigslist now for these design steals, especially after finding these oil paintings at $30 a piece.  These pictures match the eclectic Tuscan-theme we are going for, since the owners of the business are Italian.  Can't wait to get them on the wall once the room is completed!
The fourth step is to see if friends or family have items they want to get rid of or don't really need.  This is an extra sofa table I have in our bedroom.  It has random items on it, like a wedding photo, and it really doesn't coordinate with the room, so I sold it to NorCal BFF for a mere $25.
What are your thoughts on my design Repurpose Mode?  Let me know because this is essentially how I decorate and the basis of my design philosophy.  Come back to see the room completion on the next segment of DesignAxis.  Thank you for visiting and being a part of my journey!

See you later!

[DesignAxis] Aspiring Design Star

Hi there!

What I'm really loving about my blog is that I am able to delve into various ideas and creative outlets that I've always had an interest in.  One of those areas is interior design. Not only did I love admiring my new shoes in my bedroom when I was younger, as discussed in this post, I would also rearrange my bedroom furniture numerous times!  Those of you who have been following me from the start, you know that this has been an early interest of mine, from this post seen in #8.

When I was in middle school, my parents started building our house, and when my mother brought me along to the design studio to pick out carpet and wallpaper, I fell in love.  I remember the different sample books with beautiful designs and textures...it was so inspiring, and I felt so invigorated when I was in that showroom!  It was so glorious with all the furniture, and I truly felt like I was in my element.

An opportunity recently came up when my NorCal BFF, a CPA, was given a new office across the hall, which is the mirror image of her current office.  The new office has laminate wood flooring and fresh carpeting, so she wanted to give this office space an updated look.  I was honored when she asked me to be her "designer" for the project, and I jumped at it!

I LOVE doing stuff like this, so here is the start of a special series on her office transformation.  Hopefully, this somehow becomes a regular series, because NorCal BFF said she's going to make me get business cards, and she's going to start passing them out when her office is completed!  Such a great thing to have friends who have faith in you and believe in you :-)  At the very least, I will complete some projects around the house that I've been putting off lately, so I like the idea of Design Axis becoming a regular!
The current office.  To the right is her L-shaped desk that she loves and will be keeping (it happened to be after her work birthday lunch, hence the gift bag, flowers, and balloons).  To the left is a bookshelf and extra desk that she really doesn't need.
The new office!  Notice the laminate wood flooring and carpet.  The paint, in Valspar Warm Buff by Lowe's, just warms up the room, yet is tame enough for a CPA office!  Table is part of the redo!
The view from the front door of the current office space.  Very utilitarian and boring...
The view from the front door of the new office space.  More on those chairs with the next blog post in this special series!
The current kitchen area.  This will become the conference area in the new space....getting rid of everything, expect for the microwave (practical use) and the clock (also practical, plus she loves it)!
The same area in the new space where the new conference table will be.
The old conference room area, which will become the kitchen area in the new office.
The newly painted kitchen area, which is looking great, except for the paint on the ceiling and baseboard!
Coming from a family where education is of prime importance, and where safe, traditional careers are the norm, I never really thought of a career in design as an option.  After I was married with children, and while I was applying to graduate school, I did consider pursing interior design instead of getting my master's degree.  When I did get accepted into UCLA, it then seemed silly to go to a local community college to get an associate degree in something that wasn't "practical & secure".

I went the "easy" route; choosing what I was comfortable with and what was accepted as well as expected.  I'm a first-generation (the first generation in a family born in the United States from immigrant parents) Asian/Filipino-American, so the stereotype of an A-minus being an Asian F, is pretty accurate.  Being a physician is pretty much the top of the totem pole, and yes, there are an awful lot of Filipino nurses out there!  I am a cross between the two as a nurse practitioner, but that's another blog post!

Now don't get me wrong, I myself have instilled the importance of higher education into my children and value what my parents have taught me, appreciating what this mind-set and work ethic has brought to my life.  But even so, I guess that for myself, my true passion lies in the homey smell of a designer showroom, instead of the antiseptic smell of a medical clinic or hospital.  So that is part of why I started this blog...to fulfill my inner designer!

Do you have a childhood passion for something that you are now reviving?  Let me know what it is and I'll be your biggest cheerleader!  Make sure you continue to follow along as we go through the office design transformation of NorCal BFF in upcoming posts!  Thank you for visiting and being a part of my journey!

See you later!
