[Food Stop] Berkley's Gourmet Ghetto

Hi there!

To continue with our weekend at Berkley (see this post here for another Berkley eatery), I had to include this Food Stop at North Berkley's Gourmet Ghetto on Shattuck Avenue.  This area has a cool, hip vibe with numerous restaurants and shops.
As we were walking on Shattuck Avenue, we heard this jazz band playing and saw a line going out the door of the Cheeseboard Pizza Collective.
See the line and all the people?  See the hubby, to the right, in the light gray shirt and red shorts, scratching his head?  He's probably thinking, "Man, after waiting in this long line, this pizza better be good!"

The Cheeseboard Pizza basically serves the same pizza all day, changing the type of pizza each day.  This way, by the time you order, you have a fresh pizza ready for you.  The pizza for the day, when we were there, had roma tomatoes, red onions, aged asiago, mozzarella, garlic oil, and fresh basil.  They also had a fresh organic salad of the day.
Probably one of the coolest things about this place was the seating options.  If you couldn't get a seat at the restaurant, where the band was playing, people went to the center median on Shuttuck Avenue, and had a little picnic with their pizza and salad.  The hubby and I felt like college students again, since we were surrounded by them, along with the locals!
My starving hubby chowing down on the pizza that was so good; it was fresh and delicious, and the salad was yummy too!

Have you ever been willing to stand in line for a specific food item?  Let me know what it is, because if it's worth it, I don't mind waiting!  Thank you for visiting and being a part of my journey!

See you later!

[Sole Mates] He+Me Weekend Getaway Couple Style

Hi there!

A quick weekend getaway for He+Me for our anniversary brought us to Berkley and this area in downtown called Epicurious Garden.
Left: He had chicken noodle soup, Right: For Me, it was salmon sashimi
We sat in the quaint garden seating area...so tranquil and relaxing.
We ended the weekend with Gelato at Lush.  He got Salted Stracceatella Gelato in a cup, and Me, I got Malted Milk & Salted Chocolate Chunks Gelato on a freshly made waffle cone!  Sooo good!
Outfit (Me) :: Shirt & Sandals-Urban Outfitters // Jeans-American Eagle Outfitters, Outfit (He) :: Shirt-Nautica // Jeans-Levi's // Shoes-Adidas
Berkley is a hippie town, so I used the 70's filter for our last photo.  Do certain places remind you of different eras?  Let me know because the shops were all cool, hip, and eco-friendly, giving out a 70's vibe.  Thank you for visiting and being a part of my journey!

[DesignAxis] Design Repurpose Mode

Hi there!

Remember the redecorating project for Nor Cal BFF's office on this blog post here?   In order to continue the DesignAxis series with this second installment and to fulfill my inner designer, I am going to show you how using my Repurpose Mode design approach can save you lots of dollars, yet yield you great style results!

The first step in this approach is to go shopping in your own space, because you already have the stuff and it's basically free.  In this case, Nor Cal BFF was able to scour through the basement at work, finding a couple of great pieces!
The first find were these pair of chairs...we'll just clean them up and they're good to go!
I was planning on placing a large mirror on this wall, and assumed it would be a big ticket item because of the size.  Imagine my surprise when she told me about this second find.  After I saw it, I was thrilled because it was perfect!
The second step is to look through Craigslist or eBay.  I found this counter height wood cafe table and these chairs for $50 on Craigslist.  The accessories on the utility cart were left in her new space (read free), so I'm using them in the redesign!

Another Craigslist find (below) was the glass-topped conference room table with 4 chairs I got for a steal at $75!
The third step is to pick things up at yard sales.  This upholstery fabric was $10 at a yard sale.  I got about 2 yards of it along with a large bulletin board thrown in at that price.  See the post here on one way to recycle old, worn items to give them new life to round out the final steps of the Repurpose Mode.
I am really loving Craigslist now for these design steals, especially after finding these oil paintings at $30 a piece.  These pictures match the eclectic Tuscan-theme we are going for, since the owners of the business are Italian.  Can't wait to get them on the wall once the room is completed!
The fourth step is to see if friends or family have items they want to get rid of or don't really need.  This is an extra sofa table I have in our bedroom.  It has random items on it, like a wedding photo, and it really doesn't coordinate with the room, so I sold it to NorCal BFF for a mere $25.
What are your thoughts on my design Repurpose Mode Let me know because this is essentially how I decorate and the basis of my design philosophy.  Come back to see the room completion on the next segment of DesignAxis.  Thank you for visiting and being a part of my journey!

See you later!

[Sole Inspiration] Things I'm Grateful for

Hi there!

Sometimes just taking a walk around the neighborhood rejuvenates me.  My simple journey the other day, with my favorite puppy, gave me so many things to be grateful for.

This is what I saw along the way, to make my recent list, 5 Things I'm Grateful for---
The beautiful trees of Sacramento, The City of Trees
Wild blackberries
A butterfly among the flowers and foliage

Palm trees, with the sun shining through, to remind me of my childhood in Southern California
People in my life that I've met along the way...learning to appreciate even the smallest encounter
Are you still trying to write your Things I'm Grateful for list?  Let me know because every time I write mine, it makes me smile all over. Thank you for visiting and being a part of my journey!

[Sole Mates] He+Me Anniversary Date Couple Style

Hi there!
Happy Anniversary to me with flowers and Manolo's...I wish!  The hubby is great about the flowers as seen on this post here, but my budget-conscious, conservative husband would not splurge on or choose these colorful shoes.  He does have great taste though, because he did find a deal at Costco with this Hartmann black tote below...LOVE it!
Me Outfit :: Maxi dress-H&M // Jean jacket-ABS by Allen // Wedges-Target // Tote-Hartmann
He Outfit ::  Chambray shirt-Nautica // Olive jeans-Levi's // Rainbow flip-flops
Of course, our favorite, SUSHI @ Mikuni's!
Even after a long, tiring day at work on Monday (and even without make up for Me), He+Me still went to dinner because, of course, it was our anniversary!
I posted this to the hubby on Facebook, as my anniversary e-card to him, because it was so perfect for us after 28 years together (23 marriage, 5 dating)!
How do you spend your anniversaries? Let me know because dinner is pretty standard for us, while we try to do a weekend away some years! Thank you for visiting and being a part of my journey!

See you later!

[Food Stop] Ginger Elizabeth Chocolates

Hi there!
I wanted to tell you all about my favorite chocolate and dessert place in town called Ginger Elizabeth Chocolates in Mid-town Sacramento.
The shop is so cute, I even love her wallpaper!  You can even see Ginger making her delectable chocolates, from Vanilla Bean Caramel to Maya Chile chocolates, and her desserts when you're there.  I saw her piping meringues when I was there, as you can see them all neat in a row below.
Top right:  The hubby likes their dark chocolate bark  (Bittersweet or Milk Chocolate with Hazelnuts, Almonds and Pistachios. Per Ounce…$1.5  ) Bottom right:  I LOVE their macarons (Almond, Salty Caramel, Chocolate Ganache, Poppy Seed Citrus Rose, Flavors with the Seasons…$1.75)
During the year, she has Saturday events, such as the Summer Ice Cream Socials here from May to October.  The day we went, it was the Basil Ice Cream, Blueberry Sorbet, warm Blueberry Compote, Pavlova Meringue, atop House-Made Graham Cracker Crust, topped with Chantilly Cream!
Let me tell you that even though it was $8 for the sundae, it was the most refreshing, delicious sundae I have ever had, and the chantilly cream with meringue on top just brought it up to the next level of heavenly!
Do you have a favorite dessert stop?  Let me know since desserts and chocolates are on top of my "To Eat List"!  Thank you for visiting and being a part of my journey!

See you later!

[DesignAxis] Aspiring Design Star

Hi there!

What I'm really loving about my blog is that I am able to delve into various ideas and creative outlets that I've always had an interest in.  One of those areas is interior design. Not only did I love admiring my new shoes in my bedroom when I was younger, as discussed in this post, I would also rearrange my bedroom furniture numerous times!  Those of you who have been following me from the start, you know that this has been an early interest of mine, from this post seen in #8.

When I was in middle school, my parents started building our house, and when my mother brought me along to the design studio to pick out carpet and wallpaper, I fell in love.  I remember the different sample books with beautiful designs and textures...it was so inspiring, and I felt so invigorated when I was in that showroom!  It was so glorious with all the furniture, and I truly felt like I was in my element.

An opportunity recently came up when my NorCal BFF, a CPA, was given a new office across the hall, which is the mirror image of her current office.  The new office has laminate wood flooring and fresh carpeting, so she wanted to give this office space an updated look.  I was honored when she asked me to be her "designer" for the project, and I jumped at it!

I LOVE doing stuff like this, so here is the start of a special series on her office transformation.  Hopefully, this somehow becomes a regular series, because NorCal BFF said she's going to make me get business cards, and she's going to start passing them out when her office is completed!  Such a great thing to have friends who have faith in you and believe in you :-)  At the very least, I will complete some projects around the house that I've been putting off lately, so I like the idea of Design Axis becoming a regular!
The current office.  To the right is her L-shaped desk that she loves and will be keeping (it happened to be after her work birthday lunch, hence the gift bag, flowers, and balloons).  To the left is a bookshelf and extra desk that she really doesn't need.
The new office!  Notice the laminate wood flooring and carpet.  The paint, in Valspar Warm Buff by Lowe's, just warms up the room, yet is tame enough for a CPA office!  Table is part of the redo!
The view from the front door of the current office space.  Very utilitarian and boring...
The view from the front door of the new office space.  More on those chairs with the next blog post in this special series!
The current kitchen area.  This will become the conference area in the new space....getting rid of everything, expect for the microwave (practical use) and the clock (also practical, plus she loves it)!
The same area in the new space where the new conference table will be.
The old conference room area, which will become the kitchen area in the new office.
The newly painted kitchen area, which is looking great, except for the paint on the ceiling and baseboard!
Coming from a family where education is of prime importance, and where safe, traditional careers are the norm, I never really thought of a career in design as an option.  After I was married with children, and while I was applying to graduate school, I did consider pursing interior design instead of getting my master's degree.  When I did get accepted into UCLA, it then seemed silly to go to a local community college to get an associate degree in something that wasn't "practical & secure".

I went the "easy" route; choosing what I was comfortable with and what was accepted as well as expected.  I'm a first-generation (the first generation in a family born in the United States from immigrant parents) Asian/Filipino-American, so the stereotype of an A-minus being an Asian F, is pretty accurate.  Being a physician is pretty much the top of the totem pole, and yes, there are an awful lot of Filipino nurses out there!  I am a cross between the two as a nurse practitioner, but that's another blog post!

Now don't get me wrong, I myself have instilled the importance of higher education into my children and value what my parents have taught me, appreciating what this mind-set and work ethic has brought to my life.  But even so, I guess that for myself, my true passion lies in the homey smell of a designer showroom, instead of the antiseptic smell of a medical clinic or hospital.  So that is part of why I started this blog...to fulfill my inner designer!

Do you have a childhood passion for something that you are now reviving?  Let me know what it is and I'll be your biggest cheerleader!  Make sure you continue to follow along as we go through the office design transformation of NorCal BFF in upcoming posts!  Thank you for visiting and being a part of my journey!

See you later!

[The Scenic Route] Exciting

Hi there!

I hope you are enjoying The Scenic Route as much as I am!  This post has expanded my horizons, introducing me to new words and works of art, plus I'm reading more books and reading my bible more consistently again.

Vocab Builder---
Sar·da·na·pa·lian
[sahr-dn-uh-peyl-yuhn, -pey-lee-uhn]
adjective
excessively luxurious or sensual.
www.dictionary.com

Art/Graphics/Photography Appreciation---
"Before you get too excited, no: the "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie has not started casting yet, and an incredibly handsome actor has not been chosen to play Christian Grey.  A professor from the University of Central Lancashire has used police technology to composite an image of what most people imagine Christian to look like." Excerpted from web article Shades of Grey:  What does Christian Grey look like?
I personally think this artist rendition is a bit weird and the man is not very attractive.  My opinion is that Channing Tatum or Matt Bomer should be cast as Christian Grey, since Brad Pitt is too old (how can that be?!) to play this character.  Those of you who are reading the book (see below), which actor do you think should play Christian Grey?

Mind Stimulating Book Club---
Everyone seems to be either reading or talking about the July Read:  Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy by E.L James; I even saw the book at Costco!  I don't know about you, but racy does not even begin to describe this book, but sardanapalian could fit the bill.  Mind stimulating or otherwise, I'm almost done with the first book, so we'll see if I  get through the series in a couple of weeks!

Verse Meditation---
"May your kisses be as exciting as the best wine, flowing gently over lips and teeth." Song of Solomon 7:9 NLT

What is your favorite part of The Scenic Route?  Let me know because it's exciting to know that someone is getting something out of this. Thank you for visiting and being a part of my journey!

Hi there!

The fact that the dress was only $6 at Ross made me feel like I had a little secret, since this dress presents much more expensive!  Other dresses from Ross here and here.
